Oregon's Bay Area

The largest urban area on the Oregon Coast is comprised of Coos Bay, North Bend, and Charleston. The area boasts the largest natural harbor between Seattle and San Francisco. For this reason it is often called Oregon’s Bay Area. Until recently, it was the largest timber shipping port in the world. It is still a significant shipping and manufacturing region.

The Oregon Bay Area is an excellent recreation area attracting folks to a wide variety of activities. These include water sports (such as fishing, swimming, diving and surfing), camping, scenic hiking, and biking. The Bay Area also boasts three fine golf courses.

The South Slough Reserve focuses on ecological research and education. For public enjoyment, it offers controlled access to upland forests, freshwater wetlands and ponds, salt marshes, mud flats, eelgrass meadows, and open-water habitats.
And for those who prefer indoor activities, there is the Mill Casino.
Inland is the Gold and Silver Falls State Park. Two breathtaking falls lend their name to the park. Strolling along a short forest trail brings the hiker to the misty base of the 200-foot waterfalls.

Three exceptional state parks are among the coastal attractions. Cape Arago State Park provides miles of cliff-side hiking trails dipping down to tide pools and scenic outlooks with picnic tables to watch whales and other marine mammals. Sunset Bay State Park includes year-around overnight camping, swimming, day use, trails, and tide pooling. Shore Acres State Park located on a spectacular bluff above the Pacific Ocean is the former estate of the pioneering lumber baron Louis J Simpson. Miles of hiking trails, overlook and picnic areas, acres of beautiful gardens, and forests welcome visitors to some of the most beautiful scenery on the Southern Oregon Coast.
